YOMARI (Newari Food)
Yomari is a traditional Nepali dish that is typically made during the Yomari Punhi festival, which is celebrated on the full moon day of the Nepali month of Poush. The dish consists of a small, steamed dumpling filled with a mixture of chaku (a type of Nepali brown sugar) and sesame seeds. The dumpling is then shaped into a cone or triangle and is typically served with tea or milk.
To make yomari, you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 cup rice flour
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons chaku (Nepali brown sugar)
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
Instructions:
- In a medium-sized saucepan, bring the water to a boil over medium heat.
- Gradually add the rice flour to the boiling water, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
- Reduce the heat to low and continue to stir the mixture until it becomes a smooth dough.
- Remove the dough from the heat and let it cool until it is cool enough to handle.
- While the dough is cooling, heat a small pan over medium heat. Add the chaku and sesame seeds and cook until the chaku has melted and the sesame seeds are fragrant.
- Once the dough has cooled, divide it into small balls.
- Flatten each ball of dough and place a small amount of the chaku and sesame seed mixture in the center.
- Fold the dough over the filling to form a dumpling.
- Shape the dumpling into a cone or triangle, and then place it on a steamer basket.
- Repeat this process until all of the dough has been used up.
- Place the steamer basket over a pot of boiling water and steam the yomari for about 10–15 minutes, or until they are cooked through.
- Serve the yomari warm, with tea or milk. Enjoy!
